Surgical Injuries
Technical and medical advances have resulted in an increased
number of surgical options for a variety of problems.
Although surgical errors are rare they can occur because of mistakes
on the part of the surgeon, a surgical assistant, an anaesthetist
or a member of the nursing team.
All members of the surgical team have a duty to provide a reasonable
standard of care in the operating theatre. Errors that can occur
include improper positioning of the patient on the operating table;
incorrect use of anaesthetic; failure to monitor the patient and
'wrong -site' surgery.
An increasing number of procedures are carried out by keyhole
surgery. Although generally the trauma of surgery is reduced by
this procedure it does require a great degree of skill and care.
Incisions must be made at strategic points to insert the small
camera and tools to perform the surgery. It is at the incision
stage that the majority of injuries are caused.
