Failure of GP to refer
General Practitioners are providers of primary health care within
the NHS. They are the first port of call for most individuals
with medical complaints or illness. They are the means by which
patients access specialist care. 
GPs have responsibilities to diagnose illnesses and treat them
appropriately. They also have a duty to refer individuals on for
more specialist treatment as and when appropriate.
GPs will see a huge variety of injuries and illness in a surgery.
Where they are unable to make a diagnosis or provide effective
treatment through the surgery it is crucial that they refer patients
on in a timely fashion to the specialist services provided elsewhere
in the NHS.
Failure to refer can result in patients missing an opportunity
for treatment and cure. Tragically in some cases the delayed diagnosis
can result in very serious deterioration and death.
